“Are you a detail oriented person? Do you give attention to detail?”
Interviewee is perplexed. Is it a question to be answered or is it a sarcastic remark? What is the interviewer trying to extract from me? Does he want me to elaborate? Does he want me to demonstrate my detail oriented behavior?
The above instance is quite common. Many a times, interviewees face such a question and they often find themselves dumbfounded. They have no clue how to answer it. Let us understand the actualities of it and see how one can tackle such a question.
What does the interviewer mean while darting the question?
Though, there could be many reasons why an interviewer may have darted the question but the most common one is his propensity to gauge the interviewee’s psyche. He wishes to judge if the interviewee possesses keen interest in ‘digging in details’ in case of discrete activities.
Further, if the job requires an individual who pays ‘attention to detail’ then the interviewer would leave no stone unturned in evaluating the interviewee on the parameter.

Detailed oriented personality: How does an interviewer gauge an interviewee’s attention to detail?
There are two basic ways through which any interviewer can gauge if the interviewee possesses the required trait or not:
- The interviewee’s response:
There are two facets to it.
1. The interviewer would consider the content of the interviewee’s answer. How does he demonstrate his detailed oriented approach? Does he provide examples?
2. The way in which he answers the query. Does he fumble? Does he get on-guard? Does he answer it in a relaxed manner as if it was a just another question?
- The interviewee’s homework and his demeanor:
An interviewer would also check if the interviewee has comprehended the job description well enough or not.
Further, he would make sure if the interviewee has put in enough efforts to know about the organization, its working, the team that it constitutes and certain key traits of the interviewer. Leaving aside this, he would also see the interviewee’s demeanor and the attire with respect to the job in concern.
An ideal answer may be:
Interviewee: “Absolutely! I have an eye for detail and this has truly helped me in my job, many a times. For instance, I was able to find the wrong usage of an analytical tool in a consumer research report that we had prepared for one of our clients. I sorted the issue well in time.”
